Five lakes make up the Great Lakes of America and are the largest collection of freshwater lakes on this planet. There are lots of things to do on the lakes of Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, including plenty of watersports such as canoeing. Late holidays can be found in abundance and the lakes are a great place to holiday whether you're in a group, couple of just travelling by yourself.
The smallest of the five lakes is Lake Ontario and has lots of boating routes available. You can check out the Trent-Severn Waterway, which links up with Lake Huron at the Bay of Quinte, making for quite an exciting canoe trip. Another choice is the Rideau Canal; it connects the lake at Kingston to the Ottawa River in Ottawa and is commonly used for pleasure boats. The Oswego Canal connects the lake to the New York Canal System, leading to Hudson River, Lake Erie and Lake Champlain.
Lake Michigan is the only lake in the group to be situated entirely in the USA. It's the second largest of all the lakes, judging on volume. Through the ages, many different people used the lake as their community; nowadays 12 million people live along the shores, mainly in Chicago and Milwaukee. There are lots of holiday deals available, so you can make the most of the beaches along the coastline, perfect for sporting activities, including canoeing to many of the islands. There are also a lot of summer homes here, as people enjoy the warmer seasons here and return home for the winter.
Lake Huron is home to Manitoulin Island, which offers lots of things to do. Water sports and canoeing are very popular; you can obtain maps from nearby cities or information centres if you plan to go on longer canoe excursions. It's definitely wise to check out the routes and familiarise yourself with area before you head out, as the open waters are huge.
The largest lake is Superior, which also happens to be the largest lake in the entire area if you're judging based on surface area. Lake Superior spreads itself across Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. The largest island found within Superior is Isle Royale in Michigan, and it actually has a few lakes of its own on the island. Scenic places to visit include Pukaskwa National Park, Lake Superior Provincial Park, Porcupine Mountains, Wilderness State Park, Sleeping Giant and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you're worried about organising all this yourself, consider package holidays. Other islands in Superior include Madeline Island and Michipicoten Island, both of which are great for camping and taking a canoe out on the shores.
Lake Erie is a popular choice for authors - it's had many poems and stories written about it through the ages. The lake, which is located across Ontario, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York, has been described as a 'sun-drenched nearly tropical retreat'. There are also delicious seafood restaurants, water parks and several vineyards you can take tours of. Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island is a fun place to visit, as is Kelleys Island where you can relax on the beach, go hiking, cycling or canoeing.
