Dublin always has many big events throughout the year and April and May of 2011 is no exception. Anyone visiting Dublin during this time will be spoilt for choice as there are some really good events in progress. This is just a sample of the best events in the world of culture and sport during that time:
In Handel's Day on 13th April 2011. Venue: Temple Bar, Dublin
This is on from 10am until 12 midnight and is a celebration of music and history in 18th century Dublin. There will be a host of free activities going on in the Temple Bar Area. Handel's Messiah was first performed on Fishamble Street in Temple Bar and will be commemorated with an outdoor performance of the Messiah on the Street, as well as a special performance of the Hallelujah Chorus by three national schools in Dublin. Featuring vocals from children, instrumental music and percussion, Handel for Children will be performed by Harold's Cross National School and Tullamore Classical String School.
International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival 2011 on 3rd May 2011 - 16th May 2011
The International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival celebrates the major contribution of gay people to theatre, literature and the arts down through the years. The Festival was founded in 2004 on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Oscar Wilde and highlights new or recent works with a gay theme or relevance. This Festival draws a very large attendance from Ireland and all around the world.
Dublin Dance Festival on 13th May 2011 - 28th May 2011
The Dublin Dance Festival is concerned with presenting contemporary dance from all around the world. It offers a diverse programme of performance, films, talks, master classes, workshops and outdoor events at several venues around Dublin city centre. One of the big highlights is the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan's Songs of the Wanderers, in the Grand Canal Theatre Dublin for one night only on May 26th. There will be a major focus on Asian choreographers and will also feature the work of many artists from Ireland, Europe and North America.
UEFA Europa League Final on 18th May 2011. Venue: Aviva Stadium
Dublin will host its first major European soccer club final on Wednesday 18 May 2011 at the Aviva Stadium. More than 50,000 football fans will watch two of Europe's top clubs battle for this coveted trophy.
The Carling Nations Cup on 23rd May 2011 - 27th May 2011. Venue: Aviva Stadium
The Carling Nations Cup will be the first senior international football tournament played in Ireland. There will be six matches played between the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Monday May 23rd: Republic of Ireland v Northern Ireland Tuesday May 24th: Wales v Scotland Thursday May 26th: Wales v Northern Ireland Friday May 27th: Republic of Ireland v Scotland.
During the years of the economic boom Ireland gained a reputation for being quite an expensive place to visit but one good consequence of the economic downturn is that it has forced businesses to become more competitive in pricing. The latest data suggests that Ireland is now one of the least expensive places to visit with the cost of bed-nights being among the lowest in Europe.
This means that now is a good time to visit Dublin and enjoy some of the many events going on.
